Re-living Vanier College: Featuring Yvonne
Vanier College has been around for over 50 years. Within that time, thousands of students have walked its halls and have graduated. Amongst those students is Yung Fong Au. She reached out to The Insider showing interest in wanting to be interviewed and her short and sweet answers are what she shared:
My full name is Yung Fong Au. My common Christian name is Yvonne. That’s how everyone calls me.
I was enrolled at Vanier in Fall 2004, and I graduated in Winter 2006.
I have not been back to Vanier in years, so I cannot tell how different the campus looks like now. But I can vividly remember the thick snow between Building A and Building N.
Here are some of her memories about Vanier”
Memory #1: Going to the Vanier library every Sunday afternoon to work on Physics exercise.
Memory #2: Volunteering at the West Montreal Rehabilitation Center every Friday lunchtime.
Memory #3: Selling my textbooks at half price by putting up an ad on the bulletin board.
Yvonne went on to say:
At Vanier, I was blessed with good and professional teachers, whose teaching shaped who I am today. My teachers encouraged me to work hard, and I did.
The teacher who influenced me most is Ms. Erin MacLeod, an English teacher. What she once said changed my life completely. She told me: “Yvonne, I think you write very well.” This comment of hers made me choose Communications in University, instead of pursuing Nursing as I had planned since I was ten years old.
This goes to show the impact a teacher can have on a student. The Insider hopes everyone has a teacher like Ms. Erin MacLeod. If you’re wondering what advice Yvonne has for students, she encourages them to:
“Work hard and play harder!”
I can share a piece of advice that I myself got from my old Chemistry professor at Vanier (who is still teaching there today).
“If you have nothing to do on a Friday night, go on a date. When choosing a partner, choose someone interesting to talk to. And use your mind and heart to decide if they are the one…”
Love advice from a Chemistry teacher is undoubtedly good advice!
To conclude, The Insider would like to thank Yvonne for reaching out to us and sharing what her time was like as a Vanier College student. We wish her all the best in her current and future endeavors.
